The 2nd and 3rd team
November 18, 2005

The 2nd KEMAT team arrived in Abbottabad in the morning of October 22nd and took over all the tasks from the 1st team without any reservation. As many young physicians have joined the 2nd team, mostly composed by staff of Asan Medical Center in Seoul, the camp was full of energy and vibrancy. Lawmaker Mr. Seok Hyun Lee, the Chairperson of Health and Welfare Committee of Korean National Assembly, also joined this team and supported all the commitments and hard works of all the Korean medical teams and rescue teams dispatched to the quake-hit-areas while taking a field assessment from Abbottabad via Balakot to Muzaffarabad. Over ten Korean NGOs are taking part in voluntary medical work in Patika, Balakot, Muzaffarabad, Batagram and Abbottabad.

Cases of scabies are continuously on the rise and many people, especially children, are still in need of long-term medical attention after being amputated. Dr. Irfan Khattak, general surgeon of Ayub Medical Complex and the coordinator of voluntary medical works, said that they need medical equipments, such as DERMATOSE or MESHER to take care of those patients. Drugs for anesthesia are also needed. Moreover, mental shocks they are going through also should be brought under delicate treatment.
Operation Rooms of Ayub Medical Complex, once being shut down fearing of additional collapse are now functioning little by little. The 2nd KEMAT conducted five major surgeries including skin graft for open fractures, K-Wire Reconstruction Operation and PROSTALAC at operation rooms in cooperation of Pakistani doctors.
In Balakot mobile clinic, considerable numbers of patients are suffering from diarrhea and de-hydration. Scabies is a major concern here, too.
The 2nd team has treated total 2,810 patients (2,485 at Ayub Medical Center, and 325 in Balakot mobile clinic).

Due to the huge difference of temperatures between day and night, the number of patients coming down with the ARI (Acute Respiratory Infections) continues to increase. At Ayub Medical Complex, quake-related emergency patients have been decreased prominently, compared to the situation of two weeks ago and more and more patients with chronic diseases come to see a doctor and want to get medicines for their diseases. However patients in need of minor surgeries, dressing, cast and suturing still marks 70~80 people a day on average.
More equipment and efforts are necessary to be put on prevention of epidemics. Although KEMAT is carrying out some prevention steps using smoke disinfector, but more organized projects should be urgently arranged and carried out.
In Balakot mobile clinic, cases of diarrhea, skin diseases like scabies, and ARI are still topping the list and many patients who need to get their dressing renewed, who need to get care after being amputated keep visiting the mobile clinic.
The 3rd team has treated 3,395 patients all together (2,353 at Ayub Medical Complex and 1,040 at mobile clinic in Balakot), marking the total number of patients through the activities of KEMAT is 7,505 approximately.
Ending its voluntary medical works, the KEMAT donated medicines (anti-scabies drugs, antibiotics, fluids, etc.) and medical supplies left from their activities to the Ayub Medical Complex and some medicines to the Good Samaritan Hospital run by Korean missionaries in Pakistan.
